Class LP – Year 5

Welcome back and Happy New Year!

I can’t quite believe that we are in term 2 already.  Year 5 had a fantastic time last year and it has been a pleasure to share in their successes.

Our learning this term is going to be based around the Victorians.

In English, we will be reading and studying the novel, Street Child by Berlie Doherty.   We will be using this as the context for our writing which will include: diary entries, letters and explanation texts.  Through this we will focus on a range of spelling punctuation and grammar as well as develop our reading and inference skills.  Children will have to research various aspects of Victorian life and will be required to compare and evaluate different sources of information.

In Maths, the children will continue to build upon their knowledge of the four number operations and develop both mental and written methods. They will also extend their understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages, investigate the properties of shape and work with various units of measure. Application of mathematical understanding in real-life situations forms a key focus and the children will undertake a range of challenges and projects.

In Science, children will explore reversible and irreversible changes. They will have opportunities to use scientific vocabulary while developing their investigative skills. Children will understand which substances are soluble and which are insoluble. They will create solutions and discover ways in which to recover a dissolved or undissolved solid through processes such as evaporation, filtration, magnetism or sieving.  Children will also be investigating the solar system and the position of the Earth and the other planets within it.

We’ve got such a busy term with lots of other exciting things to look forward to.  I know that we will continue to aim high and be the best we can be!

Curriculum Overview Term 2

Term 1

Welcome to a new and exciting term in Year 5.  We hope that you have had a fabulous holiday and are rested and ready for the busy term ahead.
Our overall topic this term will be Fairtrade.  We will be looking at what Fairtrade does and why it is important.  This topic enables us to incorporate our English topics of non-chronological reports, persuasive writing and stories from different cultures.  It also lends itself to using maths in real-life contexts.
In Maths students will cover the basic principles of place value and reinforce fluency of number facts.  They will apply this to the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
In Science we will be looking at Living Things and their Habitats.  Students will be looking at the life cycles of mammals, amphibians, birds and insects.  They will also be able to describe the life processes of reproduction in some plants and animals.
Children will be accessing the curriculum in many different ways and can look forward to many more exciting activities including:
  • Our trip to RAK for 3 days in December
  • Rehearsing for the school production
  • Trips
  • Updating the class website
