Class LP – Year 5

Term 1

Welcome to a new and exciting term in Year 5.  We hope that you have had a fabulous holiday and are rested and ready for the busy term ahead.
Our overall topic this term will be Sustainability.  This topic will encompass looking at economies throughout the world, Fairtrade and why it’s important and the impact of deforestation throughout the world.  This topic enables us to incorporate various English genres including: non-chronological reports, persuasive writing and stories from different cultures.  It also lends itself to using maths in real-life contexts.
In Maths, students will cover the basic principles of place value and reinforce fluency of number facts.  They will apply this to the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
In Science we will be looking at Living Things and their Habitats.  Students will be investigating the life cycles of mammals, amphibians, birds and insects.  They will also be able to describe the life processes of reproduction in some plants and animals.  Our second topic will be Animals, Including Humans.  Students will research the gestation periods of animals and compare them with humans.  In addition, by the end of the unit they will be able to describe the changes in humans as they develop from birth to old age.
Children will be accessing the curriculum in many different ways and can look forward to many more exciting activities including:
  • Our trip to RAK for 3 days in December
  • Rehearsing for the school production
  • Trips
  • Updating the class website
I look forward to a fantastic year and getting to know all of you! Look out for notes in your child’s planner and on the D6 School Communicator for exciting events!
